The National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Chris Isiguzo says Nigeria is heading towards anarchy, asking President Muhammadu Buhari administration to act fast to halt the worrisome security situation plaguing the country.
For some years now, Boko Haram insurgents and killer Fulani hersdmen have slaughtered thousands mostly in the North East and North West parts of the country while kidnapping, robbery and secret cultism and other forms of violence have consumed many in various parts of Nigeria.
Isiguzo speaking Wednesday at colloquium/session of tributes and luncheon to celebrate excellent stewardship of the outgoing state Chairman and members of Executive council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom Council, held at Watbridge Hotel and Suites, Uyo, said, “I want to appeal to the leaders of Akwa Ibom State to also try to be magnanimous with, provided the strategy that has been adopted here is applied to those at the highest realm (the Federal Government) because the situation in the country is becoming worrisome in terms of security of life and property.
According to him, “I know very well that the primary responsibility of a responsible government is to ensure the protection and safety of life and property. At every point in time when it becomes doubtful, then it can be a challenge. A situation in the North West- the banditry in that part of the country, the insurgency in the North East which of course is also going on in other parts of the country, the kidnapping and robbery in the South West and some parts of the South East and South South. If something is not quickly done, we are gradually heading to anarchy and it is too worrisome.
“I want to call on the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to try a different strategy. It just appears that the one we have adopted overtime has not helped us and we need to try a different one. We cannot continue to do the same thing- the same strategy over and over again and expect a different result. We must try a different strategy if we must get a different result. I am not going to bore you with different strategies. We came here to celebrate and we say then that the peace we have achieved in Akwa Ibom NUJ should be replicated at the national level,” he added.
Dr. Nsikak Idiong, a senior lecturer in the Department of Communication Arts, University of Uyo presented a lecture on the theme Capacity Leadership: The Patrick Albert Example, and applauded the stellar performance of Albert as the state NUJ Chairman.
Idiong observed that though Albert has not completed some infrastructure in the NUJ, he has succeeded in setting a tone for the leadership of the union in the state.
The Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Works, Mr. Ephraim Inyang-eyen lauded the chairman for showing capacity in the leadership of the union.
Inyang-eyen who is the Grand Patron of NUJ, Zone F (South South) assured that Governor Udom Emmanuel is bent to reward Akwa Ibom persons who show capacity in any any area of their endeavor.
Professor Effiong Johnson, Faculty of Arts, University of Uyo who served as the chairman of the occasion defined colloquium, expressing happiness that it better that a union with capacity adopted collqium to celebrate the leadership of the union.
Earlier, Mr. Patrick Albert, the state NUJ Chairman, had attributed his success in the union to the grace of God and collaboration of Akwa Ibom State government, Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, private and corporate bodies including members of the union.
