Despite the high interest shown by Nigerian girls in accessing the internet through mobile telephones, the number opting for Science, Mathematics, Technology and Engineering (STEM) career is waning.
A research conducted by Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre, Lagos shows that 89.8 per cent girls access the internet via mobile telephones while 77.6 per cent of girls believe STEM careers are for men.
The report which centres on digital access and habits of Nigerian girls conducted in Lagos State and made available to the press by Mrs. Ore Olumalesi, the Executive Director of W.TEC, shows that 37.5 per cent own computer sets, 43.8 per cent own mobile telephones while 37.5 per cent have none.
W.TEC report further shows that 79.6 per cent chat with friends, 71.4 per cent read, 49 per cent post pictures, while 10.2 per cent look for news stories.
The report indicates that 20.4 per cent use the internet every day while 69.4 per cent use social media.
