For the first time, Nigeria on Saturday witnessed a spike in COVID-19 cases, recording 553 new single-day infections.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed this in its Twitter handle.

“Till date, 9855 cases have been confirmed, 2856 cases have been discharged and 273 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory

    “The 553 new cases are reported from 15 states – Lagos (378), FCT (52), Delta (23), Edo (22), Rivers (14), Ogun (13), Kaduna (12), Kano (9), Borno (7), Katsina (6), Jigawa (5), Oyo (5), Yobe (3), Plateau (3), Osun (1),” it stated.

Meanwhile, more than six million cases of the novel coronavirus have been officially recorded worldwide, two-thirds of them in Europe and the United States, according to an AFP tally on Saturday.

As of 20:15 GMT, there were at least 6,000,867 cases of coronavirus recorded and 366,848 deaths. Europe remains the continent hardest hit by the pandemic with 2,135,170 cases and 177,595 deaths.

The United States is the worst-hit country with 1,760,740 cases and 103,472 deaths. But the virus is now spreading fast in Latin America, with more than 45,000 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 944,695 cases and 49,230 deaths.
