One person died in a four-storey building that collapsed along Iman Street off Aka Road in Uyo, Akwa Ibom capital on Saturday, the State Government has confirmed.
The remains of the deceased, a male was recovered from the rubble by men of Akwa Ibom Fire Service and bagged out to mortuary.
While four persons were rescued and taken to hospital, others were feared trapped in the rubble of the collapsed building which was under construction.
Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem and Commissioner of Special Duties, Dr. Bassey Okon and other government officials had earlier visited the scene.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Iniobong Ememobong told The Nation a combined rescue team recovered one body around 1a.m. on Sunday.
Ememobong said while rescue operations are still ongoing, it is believed that many are still trapped in the rubble of the building.
“The state government particularly Governor Udom Emmanuel is saddened by the tragic incident.
“When information on the collapse of the building reached us, the government immediately mobilized personnel and equipment to the scene of the incident and began rescue operations.
“As at 1am this morning (Sunday), one dead body was recovered from the rubbles of the building and search for other victims is ongoing. At the appropriate time the Governor will speak on the incident,” he said.
Akwa Ibom Police spokesman Odiko Macdon confirmed that one person died in the incident.
