The corpse of a robbery gang leader killed in Akwa Ibom State Police Command has been deposited in a mortuary.
Imoh Gavin Akpan, the robbery gang leader, from Ikot Uboh Village, Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of the state was shot and killed by operatives of Akwa Ibom Police Command.
A press release dated August 11 and signed by DSP Timfon John, Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Police Command recounted that ‘‘On August 9, 2025, at approximately 11:00pm, Operatives of the Command successfully neutralized a suspected notorious armed robbery gang leader, Imoh Gavin Akpan, ‘m’, from Ikot Uboh village. Akpan, who had been a key figure in numerous armed robberies and acts of terror in Ikot Ekpene and its surrounding areas, was shot during an exchange of gunfire with police.

John noted that ‘‘the operation began when Akpan, who was in police custody, led the team to a hideout in Mbiaso village that served as the gang’s armory. Upon arrival, the police were met with gunfire from other gang members. During the ensuing shootout, Akpan attempted to escape and was hit by a bullet. He was immediately rushed to the Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival by a medical doctor. His body has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for an autopsy.
From the scene, according to her, operatives recovered a locally made shotgun, two expended cartridges, and one live cartridge.
‘‘An investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to apprehend the remaining members of the fleeing gang,’’ she added.
In a related development, the police command has smashed a syndicate and recovered suspected stoen items.
A press release dated August 10 and signed by DSP John said ‘‘On August 7, 2025, at approximately 5:30 a.m., operatives of the Command conducted a raid on an uncompleted building located along Plot 70, Unit ‘A’, Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo.
‘‘Upon the arrival of police vehicles, the suspects fled the scene through the back door, abandoning a significant amount of suspected stolen property. No arrests were made at the time.
The recovered items include: three split-unit air conditioners, one Butterfly sewing machine, four and a half fathoms of wax materials, three door curtains, two Polo t-shirts, one school bag, and four new pairs of men’s native attire (up and down) and a pair of trousers
Others are one new black female gown, two white and orange jerseys, one teddy bear and half a yard of plain material.
‘‘Police are actively working to identify and trace the owners of the recovered items. The public is urged to come forward with any information that may assist in the investigation,’’ John added.
