The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has directed Nigeria’s Police Commands and Formations to prosecute individuals who are in the habit of assaulting police officers.

This is as IGP Baba condemned the recent trend of assault on Police Officers and men in uniform, carrying out official and lawful duties in various locations across the nation.

A statement released by CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, says the IGP emphasized that attacks on Police Officers, who are uniformed agents of the state, are both illegal and an affront on the rule of law.

Adejobi stated that the IGP warned that attacks on police officers and men in the line of duty would no longer be tolerated under whatever guise, as the Force holds the lives of its personnel sacrosanct.

The IGP, therefore, directed Police Commands and Formations to ensure that individuals who engage in an assault on police officers, irrespective of preceding factors, are made to face the full wrath of the law via swift prosecution in courts of competent jurisdiction.

”The Inspector-General of Police while reiterating the commitment of the Force to ensuring protection of lives and property, stressed the importance of according respect to the fundamental rights of Police officers and other security operatives, in order to enable them advance their sacred mandate of serving and protecting the citizens better and maintenance of law and order,” the statement added.

Recall that the Lagos State Police Command arrested a motorist, Mr Billy Tokunbo, who trended recently in a viral video for allegedly assaulting a policeman and also driving against the traffic in the Isolo/Okota area of the state.

The spokesperson of the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest on his verified Twitter handle on Friday, August 26, 2022.

He said: “Billy Tokunbo, who drove against traffic, was immediately arrested. His Toyota Corolla car with registration number LSR 430 FT was equally impounded immediately.

”He is to be arraigned for his traffic offense and assault on a police officer.”

Again, Nigerian music `superstar Buju BNXN will have questions to answer after boasting about spitting on a police officer.

This is according to the spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin.
