In what appears as a financial rip-off, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is expected to make N95 million on the short messaging system (SMS) from its candidates who are checking their 2020 results, an investigation by Straightnews has shown.
Each of the approved telecommunication network providers such as MTN, Airtel, Glo, 9Mobile charges charges a candidate N50 on sms.
More than 1,900,000 candidates registered for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination of the board.
JAMB said Sunday, February 16 that the 1.9 million was the highest number of registration done in the history of the board and would still increase as more candidates were expected to register on Monday.
The board’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, in interview with NAN confirmed that the 1.9 million candidates registered, noting that it was the highest registration in the history of the board.
Benjamin said, “The registration closed on Monday, February 17. As I speak to you, we have registered over 1.9 million. That is the highest we have ever had in the 41-year history of the board. Right now, we have surpassed the last year’s statistics at 1.8 million. That is to tell you that nobody has an excuse for why he or she could not register.
Straightnews gathered that the UTME examination commenced from March 14 and April 4 after an optional mock examination scheduled nationwide for Tuesday, February 18.
An anonymous student who checked his result on Wednesday told this online newspaper that he did not expect to pay N50 to check his results as JAMB charged him N5,500 to register for the UTME examination.
Meanwhile, the results of the 312,000 candidates who sat for Saturday’s 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination nationwide have been released.
The Board’s Head, Media, and Information, Dr. Benjamin, confirmed this to News Agency of Nigeria on Monday, March 16 in Lagos, urging concerned candidates to check their profiles for the results.
