The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) Saturday suspended their ongoing strike for two months.
However, activities in Nigerian public universities are expected to remain lull as ASUU remains on strike.
NASU/SSANU’s strike started with a warning strike of two weeks which commenced at the midnight on Sunday, March 27, 2022, while the extension of another two weeks commenced on Sunday, April 10, 2022, till today.
Nigerian Education Minister, Adamu Adamu in Abuja said the Federal Government has committed N50 billion to pay earned allowances for members of SSANU, NASU and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Adamu, who had hinted of SSANU and NASU’s strike suspension on Thursday, said ASUU rejected the government’s proposal over the “no work, no pay” rule.
SSANU’s National President, Muhammed Ibrahim stated this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja.
“Yes, we have suspended the strike for a period of two months”, Ibrahim told our correspondent via a telephone call.
The unions had called for the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, payment of earned allowances, usurpation of non-academic career positions by vice-chancellors, the inclusion of university staff school into the university community, non-payment of minimum wage arrears, and funding of state universities.
A committee set up by the Federal Government and headed by the Emeritus Professor, Nimi Briggs had engaged in negotiations with the two unions.
Though Ibrahim did not disclose the demands of the unions which had been met, the minister of education, Adamu Adamu during a press briefing with state house correspondents last Thursday noted that the government had reached agreements with all the university based unions except ASUU which the minister claimed was requesting for payment of backlog of salaries.
The strike by SSANU and NASU has led to suspension in the issuance of academic transcripts; mobilisation of graduates for the compulsory one year service organized by the National Youth Service Corps.
SSANU organizes into a single and coherent trade union and serve as an umbrella organization for all Senior Administrative, Technical and other Senior non-teaching staff of all Nigerian Universities and inter-University centres who elect to be members.
NASU ensures that its members are not maltreated by the management, and to provide a forum for participation in the leadership of their institution through negotiations with the management.
