Senator Etang Edet Umoyo, a third Republic Senator from Akwa Ibom State in the National Assembly in the 90s has passed into eternity.

Umoyo who represented then Eket Senatorial District now Akwa Ibom South died on Saturday, February 13, 2021, at his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom at 11:45 a.m.

Aged 71, Umoyo hailed from Idong Umoyiu family of Etebi Idung Assan in Esit Eket Local Government Area of the state.

A press release signed by Ime Etang Umoyo, son of the deceased for the family, said ”He was sick for a week before he yielded to the call to higher glory. May his soul rest in peace.’’

During one of his birthday anniversaries, Association For Better Esit Eket, a socio-cultural group, in a statement signed by its National Leader, Ayatollah Uyoata Azam, eulogized Umoyo as a “true statesman.”

“Senator Etang is a leader whose contributions to the unity, peace and development of Esit Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom state and Nigeria at large is written on the sands of time.

“Senator Etang is a true statesman, a Pan-Nigerian, founding father of Peoples Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom State and a key player in the creation of Esit Eket local government Area.”

“As a man of integrity, good conscience and goodwill, the Senator believes that what is good for the goose is also good for the gander, he believes in the equitable distribution and allocation of infrastructures, positions, job opportunities etc. to the entire Esit Eket Local Government Area,” he said.

Recall that in September 2018, Umoyo defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

At Esit Eket Council Secretariat, venue of the ceremony, he said, “I am not given to dancing around the truth. At a time the Governor Udom Emmanuel is seeking re-election, a right which is consistent with tradition and constitutional provisions.’’
