United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) partnering with the UniPod at the University of Uyo, in the next two months, will launch two key flagship projects to serve as a hub for innovation, thereby nurturing the next generation of local talent.
Also, UNDP, through its Africa Minigrids Programme with Rural Electrification Agency, would unveil a minigrid to serve149 households and over 1,100 people.
Dr. Tony Muhumuza, the UNDP’s Economic Advisor and Head of Strategy and Policy, who announced this in his goodwill message to the Governor Umo Eno at the just-concluded 2025 Akwa Ibom Electricity Summit in Ikot Ekpene, said the organization will equally support productive-use applications in Agriculture.

‘‘These are just the beginning. We eagerly anticipate the outcomes of this Summit and stand ready to support their implementation-mobilizing innovative financing, facilitating technology transfer, and unlocking renewable energy opportunities,’’ Muhumuza assured.
He recalled that ‘‘Energy is no longer just a local issue but a global opportunity. UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently declared the clean energy revolution to be unstoppable… announcing that the world has passed the point of no return.
‘‘That in 2024 alone, $2 trillion flowed into clean energy in 2024 and was $800 billion more than into fossil fuels, and that clean energy jobs now outnumber fossil fuel jobs globally. Harnessing this transformation can drive structural change toward a greener, more resilient, and economically vibrant future.’’
He commended the Governor for taking a step to establish the State Electricity Market, saying the Power Summit was a testament to his visionary leadership and a critical step towards realizing ARISE Agenda.
