A final-year Geography student of the University of Uyo shot by suspected cultists Monday night in the students’ community of Idak Okpo, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital has survived the attack.

It was gathered that the hoodlums, numbering five, invaded the community and shot one Stanley Mbanefo at close range, while he was trying to escape from a shop.

“They shot him in the arm, and we rushed him to the Life Care Clinic along Udosen Uko Street, Nwaniba, Uyo, for emergency treatment,” Chief Eno Clement, Chairman of the Idak Okpo community said.

At the Life Care Clinic, medics battled and extracted pieces of bullets from the victim, who is said to be on the verge of leaving the institution for youth service in November at the completion of clearance issues.

“We have so far removed over 14 pieces of bullets and transfused pans of  blood on him because at the time he was brought here, he had lost a lot of blood”, a senior medical staff, who would not want her name in print, revealed.

Narrating her ordeal, the female shop attendant, who simply identified herself simply as Miss Ekaette, said they were ordered to lie flat before the random shooting.

“When they came to my shop they commanded us to lie face down, before they started robbing us of cash, phones and laptops that some students brought to charge here”.

When our reporter contacted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), one Mr. Udofia, on phone, he said “I am attending a security meeting at the headquarters” and promised to reach back at the close of the meeting.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Chukwu Ikechukwu, also promised to give details after being briefed by the DPO, and enjoined members of the civil society to partner the Police in the task of ridding the society of criminal elements.
