A 33-year-old woman, who hid mobile phone in a soup to give her suspected robbery boyfriend was Wednesday arrested by eagle-eyed prison officials at Ibara Prisons, Abeokuta in Ogun State.
The woman, Fatima Balogun who hid the phone in a cooler of prepared soup to beat security, was reportedly arrested at the prison’s gate lodge by the Special Intelligence Unit of Nigerian Prisons, Abeokuta maximum Prisons.
Addressing newsmen Wednesday, the Comptroller of Prisons of Ogun State command, CP Benson Abolade said the action posed a threat to national security.
Abolade said the suspect was arrested for trafficking in the prisons which, according to him, was against the prison operation.
He listed handsets, weapons, drugs and sharp objects, among others as prohibited items in the prisons, noting “It is an offence to bring these articles to the yard without the permission of the prison officials.”
The Comptroller of Prisons, however, said the command has liaised with the police for her prosecution to serve as deterrent to others.
He frowned at such action because he knows that it impinges on the national security and that was why he gave a tall order that Special Intelligence Unit should be formed in all the Prisons formations nationwide.
Speaking to newsmen after her parade, the suspect confirmed that she hid the phone, which she bought for her boyfriend- Ganiyu Ajibode, in a soup from the Prisons officials.
Balogun said she has two children for the suspect while they were married before he eloped with another woman four years ago and lives in Fagba ,Iju-Saga in Lagos ,said she has never visited the Prison since her ex-husband was remanded for armed robbery six months ago, she denied that the man asked her to bring the phone to him in the prison.
