    2024: Top politicians  who bow to death in Akwa Ibom

    Death has shaken the foundation of political class in Akwa Ibom State following the unexpected deaths of some top politicians in 2024.

    In particular, death has taken a huge toll on some prominent members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

     Engr. Maurice Ebong

    Engr. (Dr.) Maurice Asuquo Ebong, was born on 3 June, 1943, in Oku-Uyo, Akwa Ibom State,
    Nigeria. He was married with three children.

    A distinguished Electrical Engineer, a Fellow of the Council of Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), he was an academic with Endowed Professorial Chair of Engineering, University of Uyo; an Administrator and Political Leader in different capacities at Akwa Ibom state.

    He was a Fellow and Chartered Member of other national and international professional bodies/associations such as International Electrical Electronics Engineers (IEEE), just to mention a few.

    The Managing Director/Chief Executive of a thriving indigenous company, Powercom Technical Nigeria Limited, he had some national and international Awards to his credit. He was a member, Board of Directors of Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) in 2006 – 2011, and Acting Chairman of the same Board, from 2011-2012.

    Ebong was appointed by ex-President Muhammadu Buhari as a member of the governing Board of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), on 27th February, 2018; representing the South South Zone on the board.

    A member of APC, he served as the political Leader of Uyo Senatorial District. He is yet to be buried.

    Hon. Alex Nyong

    Nyong was a former member of Mbo State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. Later, he was appointed as Chairman, Board of Directors, Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC). He died in February 2024.

    In his Facebook page is written ‘‘He was a true, dedicated, sincere and patriotic party man……..

    You don’t deserve this .

    Rt. Hon. Elder (Chief) Ukata Sam Akpan, JP.

    Ukata Akpan hailed from Nchana Ebua, Itu Mbonuso in Ini Local Government Area. The two-term member was the former Chief Whip of AKHA.

    Ukata popularly known as Obong Nsibidi was a PDP chieftain. The remains of the man will be interred at his country home, Nchana Ebua, Itu Mbonuso, Ini Local Government Area on Saturday, 27th April, 2024 after a funeral service to be conducted by Full Gospel Assembly, at the Clan PCN School, Nchana Ebua, Itu Mbonuso.

    Obong Uko Umo

    Umo was a former Vice Chairman of APC, Uyo Senatorial District. Fondly known as Commander by his friends and political associates, he was buried in in March 2024.

    Mr. Uyo Nathaniel

    Nathaniel was an APC Youth Leader for Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District and former SA to MD of NDDC. He died on Monday, March 26, 2024. He is yet to be buried.

    Engr. Etim Eyoette

    Eyoette was a director at NDDC and a strong party member. He was buried a few months ago.

    Mrs. Cecilia Ekpenyong Okon

    Okon was a former APC Chapter Women, Leader, Itu LGA. She was buried in March 2024.

    However, Rt. Hon. (Engr.) Akanimo Edet, an APC bigwig was buried on April 5 in his hometown – Ikpe Annang in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.

    More deaths will be reported later.
