A University of Cambridge-trained Medical Geneticist, Mkpouto Pius, has sparked debate, asking Nigerian Government to ban schools from organising holiday lessons for their wards.

This comes at the wake most private schools in the country are in hot contest in organising lessons for their wards during holidays.

Pius who wrote on her Facebook page said ‘‘Anything a child did not learn for 3 months of a school term, let them not learn again till the next term.

‘‘Holidays exist for a reason; it’s time for children to learn in a more experiential way.’’

According to her, ‘‘During holidays children are meant to be playing, travelling, visiting with family and friends, learning other things they are not taught in school.

‘‘If you want your kids to learn something during holidays, you can enrol them in a skills acquisition centre.

‘‘Enrol them in a tech academy to learn how to code.

‘‘Enroll them in an arts and craft centre to learn handy skills that will bring out their creativity and help them think more constructively.

‘‘Register them at a vocational training workshop to learn how to wield certain equipments together.’’

Continued her ‘‘If you’re a trader, it’s even better to take your kids to your shop and let them help you. They are learning practical economics, and also picking up other life skills.

‘‘If you’re a wealthy parent, take your kids on fishing trips, take them on a tour of several countries, take them camping.

‘‘Let them see how nature works. Let them practise Physics and Biology in the real world.

‘‘Or just let them play and roll in the dirt. There is nothing wrong with that, children learn from playing.

‘‘Anything but making them learn Maths, English, and Sciences that they have been learning the entire year.’’

Her words: ‘I really h@te seeing kids going to school during vacation for holiday lessons.

‘‘All this excessive reliance on classroom learning is why we produce adults who just have high grades but are not creating solutions to the problems in our country and continent.

That’s not sensible parenting. Give your kids a more rounded view of life,’’ the  Cambridge-trained Medical Geneticist added.
