    Press Release

Akwa Ibom House of Assembly has directed the 31 Local Government Councils in the State to revive security committees to strengthen grassroots policing.

Lawmakers say the move aims to improve community safety under the Police Community Relations Committees (PCRC) and Peace and Security Committees in line with provisions of the Local Government (Administration) Law, Cap. 90, Laws of Akwa Ibom State, 2022.

The House has equally tasked Council Chairmen to submit quarterly reports on the activities of these committees to the House through the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, while also mandating the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to ensure full compliance with the resolution.

The resolution followed a motion entitled “Need to Revive and Strengthen the Police Community Relations Committee and the Peace and Security Committee in all Local Government Councils in Compliance with the Local Government (Administration) Law to Ensure Effective Security Delivery and Management.”

It was sponsored by the member representing Essien Udim State Constituency, Barr. Prince Ukpong Akpabio and seconded by the member representing Ukanafun State Constituency, Hon. Emem Udom during Tuesday’s plenary.

Presenting the motion, Barr. Akpabio emphasized that peace and security remain the bedrock of socio-economic development and commended Governor Umo Eno’s administration for prioritizing safety and security as a vital pillar of the ARISE Agenda, particularly through the establishment of the Ibom Community Watch.

He noted with concern that several Local Government Councils have failed to establish or sustain the mandatory security committees as stipulated by law, thereby undermining grassroots security coordination and the successful implementation of the ARISE Agenda’s security component.

Lawmakers who voiced their support for the motion including, Rt. Hon. Effiong Johnson, Hon. Kenim Onofiok, Rt. Mfon Idung, Hon. Itorobong Etim amongst others, stressing the need for necessary legislative support that would ensure a safer Akwa Ibom for all.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, commended the sponsor of the motion for drawing the attention of the House to this critical issue and reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting policies that enhance peace, order, and community safety across Akwa Ibom State.

He directed the Clerk to communicate the resolution of the House to appropriate quarters for possible action.

In a related development, the House has adjourned plenary to reconvene on Tuesday, 4th November 2025.
