Staffers of Akwa Ibom State University will smile from the end of January this year as the state government begins payment of full salary them.

This was one of the resolutions reached between the state government, Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and three unions in the university on Monday, January 4.

Another resolution was immediate payment of three months backing of 25 per cent salary arrears to staff of Akwa Ibom State University for February and April 2020 and the outstanding arrears of eight months would be paid subsequently in batches of three months each.

The unions- Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian  Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and National Association of Technology (NAAT)- had embarked on strike on Monday, January 4 to press home for their demands.

Akparawa Ephraim Inyang-eyen, Chief of Staff to the Governor; Elder Effiong Essien, Head of the Civil Service; and Professor Nse Essien, Vice Chancellor of AKSU signed for the government.

Comrade Sunny James, Chairperson of Akwa Ibom Nigeria Labour Congress; Dominic Abang, Chairman of Trade Union Congress; Dr. Imeh Okop, Chairman of ASUU in the university; Akaninyene E. Ibanga, Chairman of SSANU; Idongesit John, Chairman of Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU); and Ndipmong Udoakpan, Chairman of National Association of Academic Technologists ( NAAT) signed for the unions.

The university established in 2009 has campuses in Ikot Akpaden in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area and Obio Akpa in Oruk Anam Local Government Area.
