Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), the Nigerian subsidiary of global oil giant, Shell Plc, has agreed to pay $16 million (£13 million) to four Nigerian farmers and their communities to compensate for damage allegedly caused by pollution coming from leaks in its oil pipelines. Four Ogoni farmers and fishermen sued Shell in the Netherlands in 2008 to pay for cleaning up spills in their villages: Goi, Oruma and Ikot Ada Udo. Senator Ita Enang has prayed Federal High Court, Abuja, to strike out Mr. Akanimo Udofia’s suit wanting Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept his name as the APC governorship candidate for Akwa Ibom in the 2023 general elections. Two brothers, Godwin and Wisdom Udoh, indigenes of Akwa Ibom, are to die by hanging for the murder of one Miss Oluchi Okorie, a staffer of Radio Nigeria, Unity FM, Abakaliki. A Degema High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, passed the judgement on the two, saying this was based on the confessional statements made by the defendants to the police. Suspected cultists Sunday night beheaded and escaped with the head of youth president of Inen Ikot Owok in Inen Clan, Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The Federal Republic of Germany Wednesday at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Abuja, handed 22 Benin Bronzes to the Nigerian government. The artefacts, which had stayed outside Nigeria for 125 years, were looted from Benin by the British colonialists and over the years, had moved to different countries before arriving in Germany. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has bowed by raising its weekly cash withdrawal limits set for individuals and Corporate Organisations to N500,000 and N5 million respectively. The earlier limits pegged individual cash withdrawal per week at N100,000; while Corporate organisations were limited to weekly withdrawals of N500,000. The directive on the weekly cash withdrawal limit is contained in a circular issued by the bank on Wednesday and signed by the director of banking supervision department, Haruna Mustafa.
