Alumnus of University of Ibadan, one of Nigeria’s premier universities, Dr. Phillip O. Ozuah, donated a whopping $1 million for the rehabilitation and equipment of its Medical College. Ozuah who is the President and CEO of Montefiore Medicine, New York made the donation in response to invitation by the acting Dean of Medical College, University of Ibadan, Professor Adebola Ogunbiyi in a zoom meeting for alumni. Nigerians have reacted as Sam Omatseye, Chairman of The Nation newspaper editorial board, has asked Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), to call his supporters to order. In a tweet on Tuesday, Omatseye, also a columnist with thetre newspaper, alleged that Obi’s supporters are threatening his life. “Mr. Peter Obi, call you[r] supporters to order. The total number of registered voters in Nigeria has risen from 84 million to 96.2 million for 2023 general elections, Independent National Electoral Commission announced. The latest voter statistics released by INEC shows that 12.2 million voters registered in the Continuous voter registration that ended on Sunday. According to INEC, the North-West geopolitical zone, which comprises Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi and Jigawa, has a total of 22.67 million registered voters, the highest number of registered voters. An ace journalist, Babajide Kolade Otitoju has alleged that terrorists kidnapping Nigerians for ransom have been using the money to build houses in the neighbouring country. Akwa Ibom Human Rights Community has expressed concern that the precedent set in sentencing Inibehe Effiong to prison, may adversely affect advocacy by lawyers in Akwa Ibom courts. Last Wednesday, Akwa Ibom State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Ekaette Obot sent human rights lawyer, Effiong to 30 days in prison for being guilty of contemptuous charge. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has extended the ongoing strike by another four weeks. The Nigerian Embassy in Rome, Italy, has vowed to get justice for the killing of a 39-year-old Nigerian, Alika Ogorchukwu, by an Italian man in Civitanova Marche city area of the country. Nigerian Adijat Olarinoye won a Gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham under the women’s weightlifting event on Sunday morning, July 31. Contesting in the 55kg category, Olarinoye lifted a combined total of 203kg, a games record to win the women’s 55kg Weightlifting event.
