President Muhammadu Buhari has consented to the acquisition of Exxon Mobil shares in the United States of America by Seplat Energy Offshore Limited in a $1.28 billion deal announced in February. Buhari, who doubles as Minister of Petroleum Resources, granted ministerial approval to the deal, the presidency said in a statement on Monday. Exxon and Seplat are expected to operate the unit’s oil licenses, supporting Nigeria meet its OPEC production quota in the short term as well as accelerate the development of gas resources in the area. Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has defended her Commonwealth Games 100m hurdles title after notching the first position on Sunday at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. Amusan finished in a time of 12.30s to set a new Games Record and also secure Nigeria’s 10th gold medal in what has been an amazing year. An 11-year-old out-of-school girl, Saratu Garba, has been awarded a scholarship by the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), a World Bank-supported project. Twenty Ghanaian fishermen who transported 13.670 kilogrammes of marijuana, aka cannabis Sativa, from Ghana to Nigeria have been sentenced to one-year imprisonment each. Justice Nicholas Oweibo on Thursday, August 4, convicted and sentenced them after finding them guilty of the charges of conspiracy and unlawful transportation of the drug during a hearing at the Federal High Court in Lagos State.
