The National Universities Commission (NUC) says it is currently investigating to slam court actions against nine illegal universities, also known as degree mills, operating in the country. The commission said it would also prosecute the proprietors and recover illegal charges and fees paid by subscribers to the programmes offered by the illegal institutions. Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo, the state capital on Thursday adjourned the trial of Ignatius Uduk, a lecturer at the University of Uyo. Uduk, a Professor, faces a three-count charge bordering on publishing and announcing false election results. President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, January 20, narrated how he narrowly escaped being killed in a bomb blast near Kawo Bridge in Kaduna State. Two workers of the Nigeria Telecommunication Limited (NITEL) lost their lives after a mast they worked on collapsed in Kastina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State. A telecommunication mast which collapsed in Kastina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State on Wednesday January 19, killed two staff of Nigeria Telecommunication Limited (NITEL). Abia State High Court has ordered Federal Government to pay N1 billion as compensation to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, over the invasion of his residence by the security agents. Kanu had approached the court demanding N5 billion over the invasion of his father’s house by the military on September 10, 2017. Delivering judgment Wednesday, January 19, the presiding judge, Justice Benson Anya, described the invasion as unlawful and an infringement on his fundamental human rights. The National Assembly has backtracked on the Direct primaries by amending the Electoral Act Amendment Bill earlier passed by the house last year. The bill empowers the political parties to adopt direct, indirect and consensus methods of electing aspirants to all elective positions. Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Tuesday suspended the Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government Council, Hon. Aniekpon Ekpo, over alleged gross misconduct and misappropriation of funds. The House, therefore, directed the Vice Chairman of the Council, Hon. Mercy Bassey, to take over from the suspended Chairman to act, pending the conclusion of investigation into the matter.
