The Chairman of Ikono Local Government, Mr Nyakno Uwemedimo Okoibu, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the area to check rising wave of cult activities. The curfew which lasts from 6 a.m-6 p.m daily commenced on Tuesday, December 28 till further notice. A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Council Chairman, Engr Nsisong Ntuk, stated that the restriction is necessitated by his desire to check, halt, stop or prevent cult related activities which have resulted in killings and looting of property in the area. Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Health, Prof. Augustine Umoh, says his ministry has shut 12 medical laboratories in the state for alleged involvement in unwholesome medical practices. Umoh who told journalists in Uyo after the Inspection Team sealed some laboratories on Sunday said the practices pose danger to excellent health care delivery services. He said the clampdown is in compliance with the directive from the State Executive Council over sub standard services of medical laboratories operators in the state. The Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, has advanced two conflicting issues for the cancellation of the popular Calabar Carnival. The governor had announced the cancellation of the event over what the government attributed to COVID-19 pandemic and the new Covid-19 variant Omicron in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
