The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division Wednesday benched a judgment that validated the powers of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, to recruit the rank of constables for the Nigeria Police Force. The appellate court in a unanimous decision held that the IG lacked the power to recruit constables for the police force and consequently nullified the said recruitment. The Police Service Commission (PSC) had approached the appellate court to challenge last year’s recruitment of 10,000 constables by Adamu. Nigeria has recorded 201 new COVID-19 cases, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced this on Wednesday. Of the new cases, Lagos recorded 77, Rivers recorded 37, Plateau 25, 13 in the FCT, 12 in Kaduna and Ogun 12, eight in Adamawa, seven in Taraba, four in Imo, two each in Kwara and Osun and one each in Abia and Oyo State. The new cases bring the total number of infections recorded in the country to 58,848. Of the total cases, 50,358 have been discharged while 1,112 have died.
The Federal Government has approved October 11 as reopening date for all Unity Schools in Nigeria. Adamu Adamu, Minister of Education, made the announcement in a letter he signed on Wednesday. The minister said the approval was for students in Junior Secondary School and Senior Secondary School. Adamu noted that students at home since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic can now complete their academic session which ends in December.
