A preliminary 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Los Angeles area late Friday night, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The quake centered less than two miles west-southwest of South El Monte occurred at 11:38 p.m. According to seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones, the focal point of the earthquake was almost the same location as the M5.9 Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987. Tragedy struck Friday, September 18, when no fewer than 31 mourners were feared to have died at Akaeze Development Centre in Ivo Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. Nigeria has recorded 221 new COVID-19 cases, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) stated this on Friday night. Of the new cases, 59 were recorded in Lagos, 46 in Abia, 22 in the FCT, 20 in Gombe, 17 in Plateau, 11 in Rivers, seven in Bauchi, six in Benue, Ekiti and Imo, four in Kaduna, Kwara and Ondo, three each in Ogun and Osun and one each in Bayelsa, Edo and Kano. The new cases bring the total infections in the country to 56,956. A total of 48,305 persons have recovered and been discharged while 1,094 have died.
