    COAS orders Release of detained Female Soldier

    The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, has ordered the immediate release of a female soldier, detained for accepting a marriage proposal from a male corps member.

    Pte. Hannah Sofiat the soldier was seen in a viral video on social media cuddling and kissing the NYSC member at the National Youth Service Corps Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Kwara few weeks ago.

    Later, the Army Public Relations Officer explained that the soldier infringed on the code of military laws for engaging in amorous relationship with her uniform.

    Sources in the Nigerian Army said the Army Chief called for her release in the spirit of Christmas.

    This was as several groups and individuals had called on the Nigerian Army to release the female soldier.

    More than 10,000 persons have signed two petitions domiciled on the Change.org platform, demanding the release of a female soldier, Private Sofiyat Akinlabi.

    The first petition started by activist Deji Adeyanju of Concerned Nigerians has attracted over 5,000 signatures as of press time. It was titled, ‘FreeSofiat: Nigerian Army should release detained female Nigerian soldier immediately.’

    Sofiat had earlier been detained for violating military rules and regulations by getting involved in a public display of an amorous relationship with a paramilitary trainee, a corps member.
