Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Thursday evening, arrested Willie Obiano, the immediate past Anambra State Governor.
Obiano was arrested at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos at about 8.30 p.m.
He was reportedly on his way out of the country to Houston, Texas in the United States after handing over to his successor, Governor Charles Soludo.

On November 15, 2021, the commission wrote to the Comptroller-General of the NIS, requesting the Service to place the governor on watchlist and to inform it anytime he is travelling out of the country from any of the international airports and other points of entry and exit.
Although the EFCC did not formally prefer any charge against Obiano since he was still enjoying immunity from prosecution as a sitting governor in Nigeria, the agency wrote to the Nigeria Immigration Service to prevent him from travelling out of any of the nation’s airports.

Since coming into office in 2013, Obiano was never linked with any scam or fraud-related controversy, an action that made the governor to describe the watchlist as an ‘inelegant drama.’
