The Federal Government has awarded contract worth about N1.1 billion for the construction of a road linking two local government areas of Akwa Ibom State.
A letter of contract award leaked to Straightnews in Uyo showed that the job spans Atan Ikot Okoro-Ukana Ikot Ngwo with a bridge at Ikot Inyang all in Essien Udim and Ikot Ekpene local government areas of the state.
Our reporter learned that the road users have over the years encountered untold hardships and losses owing to years of neglect of the road by successive administrations.
Awarded by the Federal Ministry of Works to Raycon & Co. (Nig.) Limited, the road will cover six kilometres.
An insider confided in the online newspaper “The project starts from Atan Ikot Okoro to Ukana Ikot Ngwo with a bridge structure. There is a roundabout and a spur to NIPP Transmissioin station at Ikot Inyang.”
Meanwhile, the ministry’s officials on Wednesday, July 10 in a convoy of four white Hilux Toyota cars showed the contracting firm the site, but the company is said to mobilise to the site as soon as the rains subside.
However, officials of the ministry and the company who were reluctant to speak to the press directed our reporter to the Permanent Secretary in Ministry in Abuja since a minister is yet to be named and sworn in.
Reacting to the development, Anieitie Umoren has lauded the Federal Government for awarding the job, and called on the contractor to execute the job according to the laid-down specifications.
Umoren, a medical doctor from Ukana Ikot Ideh, called on youths in the area to cooperate with the contractor to ensure the job is done and delivered on set time, expressing the hope that more dividends of democracy would be attracted to the area.
