The Federal Government has re-arrested and repatriated the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu to Nigeria.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), who told journalists on Tuesday, June 29 revealed that Kanu was arrested and brought back to the country on Sunday, June 27.
Malami said the arrest followed a collaborative effort between security agencies in Nigeria and Interpol.
It is recalled that Kanu was arrested on 14th October, 2015 on 11 count charge bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, publication of defamatory matter, illegal possession of firearms and improper importation of goods, among others.
Mr Malami recalled a judge at the Federal High Court, Abuja, had on March 28, 2019, revoked Mr Kanu’s bail that was granted him on health grounds and issued a bench warrant for his arrest on the same date.
The judge, Binta Nyako, revoked Mr Kanu’s bail over his failure to appear in court for hearing,
“He has, upon jumping bail, been accused of engaging in subversive activities that include inciting violence through television, radio and online broadcasts against the Nigerian state and institutions.,” he added.
The minister also said “Kanu was also accused of instigating violence especially in Southeastern Nigeria that resulted in the loss of lives and property of civilians, military, para-military, police forces and destruction of civil institutions and symbols of authorities.”
Nwannekaenyi Nnamdi Ngozichukwu Okwu-Kanu, born 25th day of September, 1967 at Afaraukwu, Abia State is a holder of Nigerian Passport No. A05136827 first issued 17th October 2013 at FESTAC, Lagos.
Meanwhile, Kanu has been taken before the Federal High Court in Abuja for the continuation of his trial on charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, unlawful possession of firearms and management of an unlawful society.
Recall that Kanu had spoken of how he managed to escape from Nigeria.
The Premium Times of October 29, 2018 had published that Mr. Kanu spoke in an interview with an Isreali TV Station posted on YouTube on Monday, said his relatives helped him out of the country.
“Nigerian Army came to my house to kill me,” Mr Kanu said of the military exercise carried out in Abia State just before his disappearance.
“They killed 28 people in the process,” he alleged.
“My people evacuated me before they could get to me and they smuggled me out of Nigeria. I would say, I ’m relieved that I managed to make it to the only place that I feel safe in the whole world.”
Mr Kanu, who also has a British passport, claimed he would have loved to go to England but would not feel safe there.
The separatist leader, who by fleeing out of the country violated his bail conditions, claimed there were tens of millions of Igbo Jews in Nigeria who Israel must defend.
“Israel has to live up to their obligation to defend Judaism and Jewish faith all over the world,” he said. “We are being persecuted. We are suffering as a people and I believe it is the responsibility of Israel to make sure that Biafra stands as an independent entity in Africa.”
“Biafra has over 70 million people scattered all over the world . They have called us the wandering Jews of Africa. Those that identify themselves with their Jewish heritage are about 50 million people,” he said.
