For six years, the 36 Nigerian states including Federal Capital Territory participated in the environmental index ratings, a report by Clean-up Nigeria (CUN) National Technical Study Group (NTSG) STONE 2023 PRO-MAX, shows.
From 2018 to 2023 performance index ratings, Akwa Ibom State emerged the cleanest state in Nigeria for a sixth time in a row with other states trailing on waste management services, street/roads cleanliness, and vegetation/drainage control, among others.
Consequently, Akwa Ibom State was conferred with the STONE 2023 Pro-Max 2018-2023 Cleanest State in Nigeria Green Crystal Award.
In a report made available to Straightnews, under the Performance Indicators, Akwa Ibom State topped in Streets/Roads Cleanliness with 18% followed by FCT and Cross River pairing with 16% respectively.

Under Vegetation/Drainage Control rating, Akwa Ibom got 28%. Ebonyi and FCT scored 21% and 20% respectively.
In Waste Management Services category, Akwa Ibom scored 18% while Lagos and FCT tallied with 16%.
In Public Opinion Poll (POP) category, Akwa Ibom won by 30%. Lagos and Ebonyi trailed by scoring 24% and 22% respectively.
Under Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) of the people on hygiene and sanitation, Akwa Ibom scored 18% while FCT and Cross River bracketed with 17% scores.
And 2023 Bonus mark was 10%.
From 2018 to 2023, winners from the six geographical zones in Nigeria emerged.
From the North Central Zone, FCT topped the list followed by Plateau and Niger.
From North West Zone, Kaduna is the overall winner followed by Katsina and Sokoto.
Under North East Zone, Bauchi emerged first while Gombe and Yobe were second and third-placed winners.
South-West Zone, Lagos was the winner. Ogun and Oyo States were second and third winners.
Under South-East Zone, Ebonyi was first while Enugu and Imo States emerged second and third-placed winners.
From South-South Zone, Akwa Ibom was the first while Cross River and Rivers occupied second and third positions respectively.
Prof. Solomon Balogun is the Chairman of CUN National Technical Study Group (NTSG) STONE 2023 PRO-MAX (2018 – 2023) while Prince Ene Baba Owoh (Jr) serves as the National Secretary/Coordinator.
Members include Chief George Harrison, Rev. Francis Okolo, Nsikak Inyang, Engr. Dickson Osadolor, Engr. Ahmed Abubakar, Prof. Idris Umar, Dr. Chris Okoyo and Olukemi Adeola.
Others are Kyeller James – CUW, Australia; Zev. Daniel – Suez, France; Leah Hannah- KAB, USA; Aryeh Chayim – DSZ, Germany and Joechim Harrison – ICLEI, Canada.
In May 2016, in Calgary, Canada, Clean-up Nigeria (CUN) secured the initial project funding from the International council for local environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), Canada to carry out the State of the Nigeria environment (Stone) studies annually.
By November 2016, the parties (ICLEI & CUN) succeeded in bringing on board two additional project parties, the institute de france and the foundation (SUEZ) Cedex, France and keep America Beautiful, Stamford, Connecticut (CT) USA.
By June 2017, ICLEI & CUN were set to commence the first ever the State of the Nigeria environment (STONE) studies from January 2018.
CUN was asked to search for a world-class environmental expert with a global experience to head the 15-member National Technical Study Group (NTSG).
A five-member committee of the partners was set up with each drawn from the three International project partners (ICLEI, SUEZ & KAP) and two from CUN to determine who chairs the Study group.
The committee eventually endorsed Prof. Solomon Adekunle Balogun of the University of Wincosin, Madison, USA to serve an initial six-year term.
Consequently, the National Technical Study Group (NTSG) in the past six years with his first term project contract ending 2023.
