After the attacks of Dr. Chris Ekiyor, their former president and other Ijaws by suspected herdsmen, Ijaw youths under the umbrella body of the Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, have decided to meet in a couple of days to take a stand on the attack.
Ekiyor was reportedly attacked last Thursday by suspected herdsmen who shot at his car and others on the East-West Road, injuring six passengers including a serving member of the NYSC who was shot on the left side of his chest and both arms.
The youths warned that the Ijaw nation will have no option than to defend itself, saying “We are very fit to defend ourselves and will use whatever resources at our disposal to resist these attacks as the Ijaw nation has never been defeated in any war.”
The position of the youths was given by the IYC president, Owielaemi Pereotubo during a solidarity visit to Dr. Ekiyor at his Patani country home over the attack on him.
Owielaemi, who described the incident as unfortunate and an attack on the Ijaw nation, said that the Ijaw people will not sit, fold their arms and wait for terrorists under the guise of herdsmen to attack their people.
He said: “In a couple of days, the Ijaw nation will gather and decide the next line of action to take on this and many others that have to do with security of lives and property in the Niger Delta and the Ijaw nation and we will come up with our position.”
