Scores, including civilians, sustained serious injuries, Tuesday, following a clash between soldiers and policemen in Abakpa area of Enugu metropolis.

The bone of contention, Vanguard learned, was a disagreement at a traffic control post, which led to a police officer allegedly slapping s soldier in mufti.

The soldier was said to have approached the policeman controlling traffic to know why he was allegedly passing motorists in a particular lane, leaving motorists in two other lanes, complaining that it was causing a heavy traffic jam.

The police officer not knowing that he was a soldier allegedly replied to him with slaps on his face.

The soldier was said to have put a call to his colleagues, who trooped to the scene, from their nearby barracks.

On arrival, they were said to have made straight to the policeman and rained blows all over him, an action that attracted the attention of other policemen close by.

In the process of running for their lives, many civilians were injured while some policemen also sustained an injury in the fight.

An eye witness and a trader, who gave his name as Jude, described the incident as most unfortunate and called on the authorities of the army and police to always caution their men to restrain from the violence of any kind.

He said that the incident could have been avoided if security operatives were usually polite while dealing with people irrespective of class, profession, religion and ethnic leaning.

When journalists contacted Ebere Amarizu, the Enugu Police command Public Relations Officer, he confirmed the incident, noting that the commissioner of Police intervened and the matter was resolved amicably.
