    Udom Emmanuel, A’Ibom Governor, Wins In 30 LGAs: Update

    The incumbent governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, has won the governorship election announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state.

    INEC, Sunday, announced results in the 31 local government areas in the state, though Emmanuel is yet to be officially pronounced.

    Mr Emmanuel, who was seeking re-election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), scored 519,712 votes in the 31 local government areas, representing more than 83.9 per cent of the total votes cast in those areas.

    His main opponent, Nsima Ekere of the All Progressives Congress (APC), polled 171,978 votes in the 31 local government areas, representing about 26.1 per cent of the total votes announced so far.

    The local government areas are Ibeno, Urue Offong Oruko, Etinan, Nsit Ubium, Okobo, Esit Eket, Onna, Ibiono Ibom, Oruk Anam, Nsit Ibom, Udung Uko, Ukanafun and Uruan.

    Others are Nsit Atai, Ikot Abasi, Etim Ekpo, Ikot Ekpene, Ika, Oron, Itu, Obot Akara, Uyo, Abak, Esit Eket, Urue Offong/Oruko, Ini, Mbo, Mkpat Enin, Essien Udim and Eket.

    To emerge as Governor of a State a candidate must score:

    (1) The highest number of votes cast at the election; and

    (2) Must have not less than one-quarter of all the votes cast in each of at least two-thirds of ALL THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS in the State.

    [See: Section 179 sub 2 of the 1999 Constitution].

    In Akwa Ibom State, two-thirds of 31 LGAs is 21.

    For a person to be declared winner of governorship election in Akwa Ibom, he must not only win by securing the highest number of votes cast but, his victory must spread across not less than 21 local government areas.
