Barca #1, Manchester United Drop to #4 in World’s Highest Paid Team

Barcelona are on the top perch of the world’s highest paid team 2017, according to the global sports salaries survey (GSSS) released this weekend.

Barca are followed by Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. Barcelona lead the way at £6.6 million. Lionel Messi and his new £500,000-a-week contract extension, signed in July, contributed to the rise.

Manchester United are no longer holders of the top spot, but drop to fourth position this year.

The metric utilized here is average base salary per first team player.

Paris Saint-Germain are moving up the ladder fast having splashed cash on Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, bringing their average up to £6.5 million.

Real Madrid come in third at £6.2 million, while United are next at £5.2 million.

Despite the big money spent by Old Trafford this past summer, they could not bring down the overall average even with the highly paid Bastian Schweinsteiger and Wayne Rooney. United have become a summer transfer window only buying club, but they do keep spending big during those summers.

The trio of Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic cost more than £136 million.
