The Nigerian Government has begun the implementation of key welfare components of its renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The federal government on January 14 signed the renegotiated agreement with ASUU to address the recurring strikes in Nigeria’s public universities.

The new agreement follows intensive renegotiation between the government committee and leadership of ASUU, which was concluded in 2025.
A statement on Monday, signed by Boriowo Folasade, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education for Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education. said the federal government had fulfilled its obligation under the agreement by approving the 40 percent consolidated academic allowance (CAA) increase for ASUU members, with effect from January 1, 2026.
According to the statement, the Federal Government has fulfilled its obligation to implement a 40 per cent increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for ASUU members, with effect from January 1, 2026, in line with the agreement reached with the union.

The ministry said that some federal universities have already begun reflecting the approved increase in their salary payments.

To ensure uniform implementation across the country, the Ministry of Education said all federal universities are being formally notified to fully cascade the approved increment within their institutions and integrate it into their payroll structures so that all eligible academic staff benefit accordingly.

Alausa also issued a directive to Vice Chancellors of federal universities on the implementation of the Consolidated Tools Allowance (CATA), stressing the need for strict adherence to the approved framework.

He urged university managements to make judicious use of available resources to ensure the successful rollout of the allowance.

The Minister noted that payment of CATA has already been captured and circularised by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) and that its inclusion in the 2026 budget is part of a formal statutory process.

He urged university authorities to take proactive steps to ensure prompt payment of the approved allowance in line with NSIWC guidelines, emphasising that timely implementation of both the CAA increase and CATA would strengthen the academic environment, boost staff morale, and enhance teaching, research, and learning outcomes across Nigerian universities.

The Federal Government reiterated its resolve to honour agreements reached with stakeholders in the education sector and pledged continued constructive engagement, transparency, industrial harmony, and sustained efforts to improve the quality of education in Nigeria.
