The House of Representatives has called for an independent probe into the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Comrade Etimbuk Daniel Sunday, at Agwu Orientation Camp in Enugu State.
The motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Procurement, Hon. Idem Unyime (APC, Akwa Ibom) triggered the call for the probe.
Moving the motion, Idem representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency expressed concern about the circumstances surrounding Etimbuk’s death on October 11, 2026, after a reported medical emergency at the camp.

He noted that Etimbuk, a former president of the Students’ Union of the Govrnment of Akwa Ibom State University, reportedly visited the camp clinic on October 7 after experiencing symptoms associated with malaria or typhoid.
The lawmaker informed that the deceased received initial treatment at the clinic and was subsequently discharged with oral medication.
According to Idem, concerns were however raised about the treatment he received, the deterioration of his condition, and an alleged delay in referring him to a hospital for further medical attention.
‘‘Beyond honouring his memory, the motion underscores our collective responsibility to protect the lives of young Nigerians who answer the call to national service,’’ Dr. Idem said.
He drew attention to concerns surrounding the medical attention reportedly provided to the deceased before his death, the alleged delay in referring him to a hospital, and questions raised about the condition in which his body was handed over to his family.
‘‘These are serious issues that demand a transparent, independent and impartial investigation to establish the facts and ensure accountability where necessary,’’ he stressed.
The lawmaker said an investigation was necessary to establish whether appropriate medical procedures were followed and whether timely intervention could have changed the outcome.
He expressed concern over reports that Sunday’s body was handed over to his family naked and with visible bruises, saying the allegations required a thorough, independent, and impartial investigation.
Idem emphasised the need to establish the circumstances surrounding both his death and the release of his body to provide clarity for the bereaved family and ensure accountability if any wrongdoing was established.
Adopting the motion, the House mandated its Committees on Youth Development, Health Care Services, Police Affairs, and Human Rights to investigate the incident and submit their findings within four weeks.
It urged the Federal Ministries of Youth Development and Health and Social Welfare, alongside the NYSC Directorate, to review and strengthen healthcare delivery and emergency response procedures at orientation camps nationwide.
The House observed a minute of silence in his honour, paying tribute to his service to our nation and expressing solidarity with his bereaved family, friends, the student community and the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State.
Etimbuk, who hailed from Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, was raised in Ikot Etim, Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.
