    COVID-19: Nigeria’s Cases Plunge, Akwa Ibom’s Surge

    For a second day, Nigeria’s COVID-19 new infections continue to witness a downward slide.

    On Sunday, February 7, Nigeria recorded 506 cases while the country got 643 on Monday, February 8, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC confirmed.

    NCDC tweeted on Monday, ”On the 8th of February 2021, 643 new confirmed cases and 6 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

    Of the Nigerian 18 states including Federal Capital Territory, Oyo State has, for the first time, led the pack with 88 cases.

    A breakdown shows ”The 643 new cases are reported from 19 states- Lagos (86), Rivers (55), Edo (54), Adamawa (52), Plateau (45), Kaduna (41), FCT (34), Kwara (27).

    Others are Benue (20), Kano (19), Delta (18), Nasarawa (16), Niger (15), Bayelsa (11), Borno (5), Bauchi (2), and Sokoto (2).

    This is as Akwa Ibom State recorded 53 cases on Monday, bringing the total confirmed cases to 1,143 while 580 persons had been treated and discharged by isolation centres in the state.

    According to the public health agency, ”Till date, 140391 cases have been confirmed, 114635 cases have been discharged and1673 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

    ”A multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC) activated at Level 3, continues to coordinate the national response activities.

    ”Our discharges today include 744 community recoveries in Lagos State, 100 in Rivers State, 78 in Plateau State, 72 in Kaduna State and 2 in Benue State managed in line with guidelines.”

    However, the NCDC Director-General, Dr. Chikwe Ihekwearazu tweeted ”Today, DG @Chikwe_I gave updates on genomic surveillance activities in response to #COVI19

    “There’s likelihood of detecting more variants of concern as we scale our sequencing. 6 more samples with B.1.1.7 detected & none yet with B.1.351 variant, dominant strain in S. Africa.”
