Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has converted Rivers State from huge construction site to big inauguration mill.

The two-term Governor began construction of flyovers by Julius Berger in October 2019 with initial N21 billion for first three to create faster flow of traffic in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola unveiled five flyovers including Rebisi (Garrison) flyover on Saturday, November 7, last year.

Fashola, who took a walk on the 969.4 metres-long Rebisi Dual Carriage Flyover Bridge with Governor Wike, said such development efforts would promote peace among residents and would bring back tourism to the Garden City.

The Minister, who had earlier visited the Rumuogba, Okoro-Nu-Odu, Rumuola and GRA Junction flyovers, said: “What I witnessed is a massive urban regeneration and urban renewal of Port Harcourt.”

Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Eloka Tasie-Amadi, said when the Rebisi Flyover Bridge was flagged off on the 24 October 2019 it was to be delivered in 16 months but it had been achieved within 12 months.

Governor Wike said when the state government flagged off the Rebisi, Okoro-Nu-Odu and Rumuogba flyovers simultaneously in October 2019, many skeptics had questioned the possibility of the State completing the projects within the estimated time frame of 16 months.

He explained that the contractor, Julius Berger, worked assiduously, even during the COVID-19 lockdown, just to ensure that the projects were delivered on time.

“By December, we have to commission Okoro-Nu-Odu flyover. By February, we have to commission Rumuogba and Rumuola; by March-April, we will commission the GRA flyover” he said.

The governor said the flyover bridge by CFC/Corpus Christi bus stop will be expanded to make it the sixth flyover project under construction in the state.

Again, Wike administration to another big leap by inaugurating Rumueche/Rumuakunde Ohna Awuse Road in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State on Monday, January 11.

Former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha called on the people of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to come together to make Nigeria great.

“In this dispensation, there are many bad people in APC and many bad people in PDP. I think the good people of APC and the good people of PDP must come together for the purpose of making Nigeria great,” he said.

“I could imagine where I joined forces with Wike, let us bring all like minds and great people of Nigeria. Rather than complaining, let us come together  to make this nation greater and greater as it should be.”

Speaking on governance, the ex-Imo governor said the Nigerian people were not asking for too much from their leaders.

According to Okorocha, any leader who cannot provide the basic necessities of life for the masses must be considered a failed leader.

“The masses of Nigeria are not asking for too much from their leaders. All they are saying to us is, give us basic necessities of life – water, light, roads – and then you can do whatever you want to do.

“That is all that they ask. I think that leaders who are able to provide this for their people must be considered as failed leaders,” he added.

Okorocha praised Governor Wike for his administration’s achievements in providing infrastructural projects for the people of the state.

Although he described Wike as a controversial politician, he however noted that the governor is not a failed leader.
