Failure by customers to link Bank Verification Number (BVN) and National Identification Number (NIN) to their bank account(s) has led to closure by most banks.

The CBN had on December 1, 2023, in a circular directed that a ‘Post no Debit’ restriction be placed on all bank accounts without the BVN and NIN from Friday, March 1, 2024.

The circular, jointly signed by the Director, Payments System Management Department, Chibuzo Efobi; and Director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Haruna Mustapha, read, “It is mandatory for all Tier-1 bank accounts and wallets for individuals to have BVN and/or NIN. It remains mandatory for Tiers 2 & 3 accounts and wallets for individual accounts to have BVN and NIN.

Consequently, more than 70 million bank customers are at risk of losing access to their accounts when the Central Bank of Nigeria’s directive on restricting accounts without Bank Verification Numbers and National Identification Numbers goes into effect.

However, users who are conversant with the use of bank apps and shortcodes are not bothered about long queues as they can complete the process from their place of comfort.

All banks have made available, means through which their customers can link to their bank accounts to avoid being shut out from making debit transactions.

What is the code for NIN and BVN?

To get your NIN code if you have forgotten it, dial *346# while to get your BVN dial *565*0#

    What is NIN and BVN

The National Identification Number consists of 11 non-intelligible numbers randomly chosen and assigned to an individual after completing enrollment into the National Identity Database (NIDB).

Bank Verification Number is a biometric technology with secure unique identifier to analyze human characteristics as an enhanced form of authentication for real-time security processes.
