The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has bowed to pressure by lifting ban on political campaigns in the country.
By this, political parties are free to resume rallies, house-to-house campaign and airing of jingles in electronics and print mass media.
Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC Chairman slammed the ban on Saturday during a meeting with stakeholders mainly leaders of the different political parties and foreign observers in Abuja.
Despite the ban, some parties had on Sunday started airing their jingles in radio and television stations in most parts of the country.
Lifting the ban in a statement issued on Monday, Mr. Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner with the INEC and Chairman, Committee on Information and Voters’ Education, said that the commission has lifted the ban till Thursday, February 21, 2019.
Recall that the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had insisted that they would re-open their various political campaigns as stipulated in section 99 sub-section 1 of the Electoral Act.
