The Presidency says most of the events slated to hold on May 29 during the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term in office will be rescheduled for the first observance of June 12 as the National Democracy Day.

However, the inauguration ceremony of President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term on May 29 will be a low-key event.

Recall that in 2018 President Buhari approved June 12 as the new Democracy Day in Nigeria in commemoration of the contributions of the late Chief MKO Abiola to Nigeria’s return to democracy.

During the February 23 Presidential election, Buhari who polled 15,191,847 votes, won in 19 states for a second term in the office.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, speaking with state House Correspondents, Abuja, said the decision was reached during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, May 8, 2019.

Mohammed noted that it would be unwise financially for the country to have two major celebrations within a two-week interval, adding that details of the events slated for the two ceremonies will be unveiled at a World Press conference on May 20 in Abuja.

”Since the first observance of June 12 as Democracy Day falls into an election year, and as a measure to sustain June 12 as Democracy Day, the celebration of the inauguration and the advancement of democracy in the country will now take place on June 12,” he said.
